More about RYLA

RYLA stands for Rotary Youth Leadership Award and is an important Rotary activity for developing young leaders.

Your club can contribute by nominating and sponsoring one or more participants. In our district, RYLA is held in English because the participants come from both Sweden and Latvia. Participants must be professionals or students at university level, aged between 20 and 30 years and interested in learning more about the opportunities and challenges of leadership.

The program includes workshops, exercises, and talks that focus on sustainable development in the context of the themes for the Rotary years 2021-2022 and 2022-2023, namely Serve to change lives and Imagine Rotary.

The program also includes social activities and pleasant fellowship. Several Rotarians from the district volunteer as process leaders and presenters. In addition, qualified resource persons who are not Rotarians volunteer to share their experience and expertise.

Participants must be nominated by a Rotary club, but they do not need to have any family ties or other relationships to Rotary. Companies, organizations or individuals can cover the costs as well as the club.

The registration form should be sent to Edijs Tanons uz e-pastu: tanonse@gmail.com no later than March 1st, 2023.

RYLA is an activity area within Rotary International (RI) that aims to strengthen young people’s leadership skills.

RYLA emphasizes leadership, citizenship and personal development. RYLA’s purpose is to:

  • demonstrate Rotary’s respect and commitment to youth
  • provide effective training for selected young adults who have leadership talents
  • encourage young people to lead and contribute to the development of their communities
  • encourage young people who make a contribution to society

The purpose of the RYLA seminars is to use Rotary’s knowledge and references to develop the participants’ own leadership, create networks, exchange opinions and experiences with each other but also to meet experienced leaders who are willing to share their ideas and their knowledge of leadership. This year’s themes also help to focus on leadership for sustainable develop and to encourage leadership that makes a difference in the world, in businesses and in organizations, using creativity and innovative thinking. The seminars also provide an opportunity to practice and develop one’s English skills and to get to know and have fun together with other young people.

Rotary International (RI) recommends that the following themes be addressed during RYLA activities:

  • Basic principles of leadership
  • Ethical and positive leadership
  • The importance of communicative skills for effective leadership
  • Problem and conflict resolution
  • What Rotary is and what Rotary does for society
  • Build self-esteem and self-awareness
